Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We offer flat Design Services fees for a specific scope of work. The Design Fee is figured after an initial consultation where we analyze the work necessary to complete the project to our high standards.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We visit the prospective client for a complimentary initial consultation to collect information about the scope of work, see the spaces, talk about goals, etc. Then we provide a Design Services Agreement that includes a flat fee and payment schedule for the scope of work proposed. Once we've received a signed Agreement and retainer, we start with our programming phase, which includes Style Assessments, interviews, questionairres, etc. Then we start designing!

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Lena G. Samuelson graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado in 2006 with a BA in Interior Design. She also studied abroad in London, at the American Intercontinental University. She passed the NCIDQ exam in 2008. Jordan Almquist graduated from the Art Institute of Colorado in 2013 with a BA in Interior Design.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I decided on Interior Design after realizing that it is a perfect blend of left and right brained work. It takes abstract creativity, an innate design sense, and a brain that works scientifically as well. Many parts of this job include detailed research, analysis, planning and environmental psychology. I also have the opportunity with every project to affect change in people's lives. Decoration is superfluous, Design is necessary.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Residential: kitchen and bath remodels, space planning, specifying furnishings, draperies, adding architectural detail to bland spaces. Commercial: space planning, specifying furnishings, assisting marketing team with branding of interior spaces, and the assisting in selection of space.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We recently completed an entire home renovation for a couple of retired farmers. They were humble, kind and trusting and allowed us to take complete control and create an unbelievably beautiful home in an Industrial Farmhouse style. It took 8 months to take the 2800 square foot home down to studs, rework the layout, change some window and door locations, and completely update the interior. We furnished every square inch of the home with personalized treasures and comfortable furniture. Their daily activities are well supported by the spaces we created. I live for the reward of knowing that we affected change in their lives - my clients will feel comfortable, special and a bit of magic in their home for as long as they live in it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
First be sure you understand what to expect when hiring a designer, then preview their work on their website. If you like what you see (remember, they were designing for someone else - it may not be your taste exactly), then meet with the Designer. Choose someone you like, as you are going to build a long term relationship with them. Budgets and styles can always change - the most important thing is the relationship.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
What their priorities are in the spaces they want changed. What activities they want to be able to do, what relationships they want to nurture, what tasks they want to accomplish and how they want to feel in each space.
