What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

Pricing for lawn care is based on the square footage and condition of the yard. If the yard or flowerbeds are overgrown, the initial cost to bring the yard into maintenance shape will be higher. Customers who are on a regular rotation will pay less because the yard is being consistently maintained and doesn't require as much labor. Landscape design projects are priced based on the scope of the project and the materials and labor that will be required to complete the job. For example, customers who provide their own mulch or decorative rocks/stones will see a discount in the total price of their project. If a project requires more than originally expected, the customer will be told in enough time to decide against moving forward and will be given ideas for alternative modifications to keep the project within budget.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

The most important thing is communication. I want to be sure I know exactly what the customer wants, what their expectations are, and what they have budgeted for the project. An initial discussion is crucial to give a clear and reasonable estimate for the project. Once the work begins, customers are notified of progress each step of the way in the communication style they prefer. If adjustments need to be made, there will be enough consistent communication to ensure that those adjustments can be made in a timely fashion.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a Master's Degree in Business and have been in business for over 27 years. I understand the needs of customers and the importance of honesty, authenticity, and a serious work ethic. As an educated professional, I am able to listen well, and clearly articulate to the customer how a project can be completed, and what adaptations can be made in order to provide the service the customer expects.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

Having been in business for years, in trucking and logging, I found relaxation and creativity in working on landscapes. I began with my own property and found it was not only a good diversion from my regular work; it was becoming my passion. I enjoyed caring for and stewarding creation; I was gratified when a landscape project added appeal to my property; I enjoyed the compliments of my neighbors; I liked being in nature and using my physical labor to create something of beauty. Over time, I decided to meld my business acumen with my passion for landscaping and Grass and Garden was born!

What types of customers have you worked with?

I've worked with homeowners, commercial property owners, leasing agents. Some have complex landscape design dreams, and some just want relief from the task of routine yard work that they don't enjoy, but feel guilty about not doing. All my customers have unique needs and requirements and I value each customer I have. I want to treat their property in the way I treat my own so they can enjoy the beauty and serenity of their home and yard.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

One recent project I did was gratifying to me on several levels. The owners obviously loved their property, but it was overgrown and had become an unsightly headache. The flowerbeds were overfull, the beautiful pool area was occluded with overgrowth, the vegetable garden had a crop ready for harvest, but was untended and weeds were taking over. The play area for the children had become uninviting. I was able to work on all these areas and restore the yard to its former beauty. It made me feel good to know that the family could once again enjoy their time together outside; take a dip in the pool, pick some carrots for dinner, and watch the children come down the slide with joy on their faces!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

1. Ask probing questions of the contract provider so you feel confident that they are transparent in pricing and in their work ethic. 2. Ask to see photos of projects they have done. 3. Read reviews of their work. 4. Pay attention to your intuition. If you feel uneasy with what they say, or how they present themselves, ask more questions. 5. Be sure you understand what they are going to do for you and that it is in alignment with your expectations for the project.
