We provide complimentary, no-hassle appointments so you can gain peace of mind about your home's exteriors without any unexpected charges. If you're looking for a roof inspection for a real estate transaction, our inspection fee is $175. If, during our inspection, we recommend roof repair or replacement work and either party chooses Retex for the project, that $175 fee will be discounted from the total amount due. We supply a 5% discount if you pay by check, and we have a great referral rewards program for any friends, family or colleagues you send our way for roofing, siding, windows, or gutter services.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Josh & Katelyn Lewis started Retex Roofing & Exteriors with the goal of creating a home exterior company providing customer care above and beyond the actual service. Josh graduated from Florida State University with a degree in civil engineering. He successfully launched his first roofing company, JGL Roofing & Exteriors in 2014 after helping his friend with a roof replacement project and realizing there was an opportunity to improve the home exterior industry. He sold JGL in 2019 to one of his employees, and in 2020 he and Katelyn started Retex Roofing & Exteriors after making the move to Richmond, VA. Katelyn studied multi-platform journalism and sustainability studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She brings the attention to detail, photography, videography, website design, and educational storytelling aspects to Retex, rounding out our excellent customer care services. Our team is FAA drone-certified, and all of our crews go through training programs throughout the year to ensure our installation practices are up to manufacturers' standards.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
As a graduate with a degree in Civil Engineering from a great university, Josh gets asked all the time, “How the heck did you get into roofing?!” Well, let’s rewind to 2014: Josh had just graduated from Florida State University and accepted a job with a huge construction company in Washington, D.C., building out multimillion-dollar law firms. But after about 6 months, he had an itch he couldn’t shake that he could do more, that he could learn faster, and that the world needed good contractors. So with some seed money from his parents and all of his savings, he struck out on his own. There Josh was at 24 years old, renovating bathrooms, kitchens, basements, and anything else that came his way, but hardly turning a dime of profit because he didn’t know enough to set proper customer expectations. Luckily, his customers loved him and the work, so the relationships survived the tough weeks and long months to follow. Around the end of 2015, a client of his who was then an executive with BP America was about to take a 2-month business trip to the Middle East. He needed a new roof and was happy to pay Josh a little extra to manage the work while he was out of the country. Josh proceeded to call 19 roofing companies, of which only six answered. Four came out to assess the work and only three actually bothered to send him a quote. Of those three, the prices ranged from $6800 to $21,000, with not much of an explanation for the disparity. After trying his absolute best as a contractor and an engineering graduate to understand the pricing differences, it dawned on Josh that this segment of the construction industry had gone awry. From that day forward, we’ve focused all our efforts on helping our customers with their roofing needs by being on time, using the opportunity to educate homeowners about their roofs, and delivering the best quality product for a reasonable price. And here we still are, working hard every day to raise the roofing industry to a new standard.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We have worked with homeowners throughout the Greater Richmond, VA area. We have helped those navigating insurance claims for storm and hail damage as well as folks who choose one of our financing options available. We have also helped customers navigate home exterior projects for their rental properties and for their aging relatives.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We have partnered with Rebuilding Together Richmond, a non-profit helping low-income homeowners buff up their home's exteriors. In early September, we were able to help one of their clients in Petersburg, VA, with replacing their roof and siding. The roof replacement project was completed in one day, and the siding was replaced within 5 days. From start to finish – assessing the home, scheduling our installation teams, ordering materials and completing the installations – the project took less than 4 weeks to wrap up. Plus, we were able to help someone in need bolster their home's defense against Mother Nature. We look forward to the next project with RTR!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Here are our top five tips to find the best roofing contractor: 1. Do your due diligence. Check with your family, friends, and neighbors to see if they have a roofing contractor or company they have used and ask how the experience went. When looking online, search for great ratings across Google, Yelp, Facebook, Better Business Bureau, or any platform you trust for reviews. 2. Narrow down your options. Consider factors like location, warranties, and responsiveness to your inquiries. If you’ve reached out to a roofing contractor or company and don’t hear back within 24 to 48 hours, think about what their response time may be if you decide to move forward with their estimate. In most cases, upfront great – or bad! – communication is a good indicator of how your experience will be throughout the project. 3. Call and set up appointments that work for your schedule. Take this opportunity to speak with the first contact with the roofing contractor or company. Feel free to ask questions about manufacturers’ certifications, industry experience, insurance coverage, workmanship warranties, social distancing guidelines, and references for jobs they’ve completed near you. Most well-established roofing companies will be happy to provide you with examples of their work, from offering you addresses of previous customers to check out their roofs to providing past clients willing to speak about their experience with the roofing company. 4. Ask questions during your appointment. You’re not expected to be a roofing expert – so come prepared with questions related to your project. Ask about the company’s process for installation, cleanup, and inspection; their current schedule for jobs – for example, how long it would take, once the contract is signed, for your roof to be installed; payment terms and options available; and product choices available for your project. If you need help in paying for your project, ask if the company offers financing options. Gathering information will ultimately make you feel more comfortable about the process of repairing or replacing your roof or exteriors by answering any unknowns and quelling any stressors you may have. 5. Pick the company or contractor that fits your needs. Things to consider here include price, quality work, and the timeline for project completion. You’ll likely receive a range of prices for the work, so review whether the differing estimates each explain the factors going into the final cost. Some companies will try to oversell you, while others will bid low but not deliver good quality work. While the lowest bid may seem the most attractive, keep in mind the quality of work you’re paying for at that price. Other companies may be backed up with projects for the weeks ahead, so contemplate whether your timeline aligns with the work. And, lastly, consider how your overall experience so far with the individual roofing contractors or companies have been in the scheduling and appointment phases, as these moments give you insights into how the company operates. If it’s a well-oiled machine with great people at every step, you should feel at ease putting your roofing or exterior project into their hands.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
In order to prepare for discussing your project with professionals, we recommend you come prepared with your schedule and project timeline. If you know your roof's age, color and/or shingle type, that information is also great to have on hand. We're also a fan of you coming prepared with questions, so we recommend you get clear answers on the following during your appointment: 1.) What is your company's process for installation, clean up and inspection? 2.) What is your company's current schedule or timeline for starting and completing projects? For example, how long would it take, once the contract is signed, for my roof to be fixed or installed? 3.) What payment terms and options do you have available? 4.) What product choices are available for my project? 5.) As needed: Does your company offer financing options? Gathering this information will ultimately make you feel more comfortable about the process of repairing or replacing your roof or exteriors by answering any unknowns and relieving any stressors you may have.
