Roofing Scams rank among the top 10 most common fraud schemes in the US. Make sure to check and verify a contractor before giving the project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

BBB Accreditation and Licensing would be a start. Having a Proof of insurance is also something that validates a proper Roofing Contractor. Certification is also needed to enforce warranties.
