Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We try to be transparent about pricing up front via professional, formal proposals. We often share our unit pricing with the client for things like flooring, tiling, drywall, trimwork, etc. This allows the client to understand the costs better and to scale the project up or down quickly. We also do not mark up material. Material we buy is passed on to the client at cost with accompanying documentation. All of our work is done on a lump sum basis.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We have an initial meeting to go over scope and walk through the details of the project. After that, a formal proposal is issued outlining scope, schedule, budget, etc. it often takes a couple of iterations to finalize everything before starting work.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Ohio State University.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Even as a full time engineer for 20 yrs, I always gravitated to this type of work. Engineers typically like to build things! I would normally always have side projects going then I started buying a house here or there to renovate and sell. I retired from engineering a few years ago when my father became sick, moved back to Ohio from NC to help with him, and started doing this full time.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
We primarily focus on residential projects that are larger in scope. Because we have the ability to self perform all trades, we tend to get more complex jobs from our clients that other smaller companies might shy away from. We do however perform some smaller scope jobs, usually as a courtesy to past and current clients. Also, because of our experience in flipping houses, we have worked with real estate agents and investors for full house turnarounds.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
We recently did a basement bathroom addition for a client who took in some additional family. The kids needed their own space she said. The kids loved it and it also solved a problem!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
It is great when the client has thought about the details of what they want. This allows for more accurate pricing and sets clear expectations for the contractor to meet. If they have not, we make it a priority to sit down with the client and work out the details. Skipping this step often leads to inefficiencies on the project.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Clients should ask about logistics and timing of the project as many of of our projects take place in occupied homes. With many more people working from home, understanding how disruptive the work may or may not be is important so there are no surprises.
