What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I started my own company about 3 ½ years ago and I’m trying to get my name out there to build a great reputation. I’m offering very competitive pricing and free estimates. I want to build a network of clients in San Diego by word of mouth. Giving customers a good price with great service is the best way to accomplish this.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I believe clear expectations are vital for any successful project, the key is communication. Nothing should be assumed or implied. I know all the questions that should be asked and the suggestions to get you on the right track. First thing I will ask you is what your overall goal is? How you want your house to make you feel? I also like to get a good idea of who I’m working with. I’m very transparent and an open book if you have any questions for me. The last thing we’ll discuss is budget. I really want you to get something you’ll love waking up to everyday, and this can be accomplished in many ways with many different budgets.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have worked in the trades all of my life. My Grandfather was a General contractor and guided me through the process of learning all facets of construction. After working in the field for a decade, He suggested I work for a construction management company to learn the administrative side of things. I was a superintendent for four years and project manager for two. Through this company I was able to get training on safety, plan reading, scheduling, estimating, inspection training, and much more. I’m very well rounded and confident in my work.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

My Grandfather was a master carpenter and General contractor in California for over 35 years. He built custom homes all over Socal. I was always with him as a child, and he taught me to use a tape measure and tools before I could ride a bike.

What types of customers have you worked with?

I’ve worked with just about every type of client you can think of. Homeowners, real estate entrepreneurs, insurance companies, interior designers, and property managers to name a few.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

Full kitchen remodels are definitely my favorite. Last year I did a project where the client wanted a more user friendly layout with an updated look. After giving her some ideas she decided to reconfigure the entire the kitchen. We changed locations of the sink, fridge, stove, and added an island. She had new cabinets, countertops, backsplash, appliances, and flooring, etc. The kitchen completely transformed the house. This took me two and half weeks to complete. I prefer that clients have materials ready and available for installation prior to my arrival. That way we avoid any delays and stay on schedule.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Find a contractor that truly has a passion for what they do. There are so many people out there that strictly do this for a paycheck. Experience and knowledge is important, and most General contractors will have both. But if they don’t love what they do, how will they create something you’re going to love?

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Try to get an understanding of what you want before you contact anyone. Google is an amazing resource that can answer most questions or at least cover the basics of the work you’d like to do. The more you know the safer you are. I mostly work on custom Kitchens and Bathrooms. The first things I need to know are: 1. Would you like new cabinets 2. New countertops 3. Are we moving plumbing or electrical 4. New appliances 5. Is there anything specific you’re looking for - Island - Added plugs - Larger sink - More lighting - Extra work space - Removing wall - what flooring will be used - style of backsplash Those are just some typical things clients are looking for. That list can go on and on.
