Hi, My name is Rich Marks and I have been painting and teaching for over 25 years. I work closely with my clients to make their vision come true with one-of-a-kind original artworks. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I charge by the square foot for murals based on the complexity of the design and also the surface to be painted. For example an easy graphic or logo would run about $15 per sq. ft. But a very detailed realistic mural would cost about $35 per sq. ft. And of course there are designs that fall between these two extremes that would reflect a price per foot in between the two I mentioned.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I will call the client on the phone and have a conversation about what they want painted. I will also go the their home or business if they like and check out the wall to be painted. Then I will take photos of the wall and go back to my studio and come up with a design based on their idea and show them how it will look on their wall. I put all that together in photoshop so they know exactly how it will look.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have a BA in fine art and commercial art and an associates in desktop publishing.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

I landed a job in an ad agency shortly after college and then slowly branched out on my own.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

I recently did a media room in Colorado of a night time African scene. I hid a lot of animals in the scene and the client loved it!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Think through why you want the mural and what you want painted. Remember this will be on your wall for a while. Measure the area you want to be painted and present an accurate measurement. Also explain what you want painted as best you can. Then you will get a very accurate bid and an amazing final product.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

Make sure you are serious about having the mural painted before you request a muralist. Also remember you get what you pay for like in most things.
