Introduction

My goal at the first and at the last is to serve the people around me. This is what makes the residential home improvement market so attractive, because the client I work for is not only the person who pays me but is also the same one I work with to design, make decisions about, and will ultimately use my work. It feels good to make a connection with someone who cares as much about the quality of a job as I do, and I always bear in mind that my business is primarily to satisfy a customer.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
$100/hr for skilled trade work $75/hr for small handyman type work $50/hr for unskilled labor jobs If the job is an impromptu emergency, or a service call out of the way I will charge a trip fee in addition to the hourly rate I have to add an overhead charge to materials I supply in order to cover the time and effort spent to source and stock the correct components Large quoted jobs are negotiable and offered as a lump sum price for a proposed scope. Estimates, Bids, Invoices, and Receipts are available in writing for your records

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
When I connect with a customer through Thumbtack I will send a message through the app and ask to have a quick text or phone call to make our introduction. If we can work out a solution to the customer’s need right away, we can proceed to make arrangements to get the job done. If it looks like we need some more time or information I’ll work with the customer to visit the job site or figure out the next steps. Sometimes it becomes clear we may not be a good fit and I’ll do my best to help guide the customer to a better solution. However it works, I’m here to help.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
BS Mechanical Engineer, Journeymen Steamfitter, Certified Pipe Welder, HVAC Master, Former Realestate Investor, Amateur Woodsman, Hobbyist Mechanic, Avid Tinkerer, Stubborn Husband, Helpful Neighbor.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Born and raised in Montgomery County, I have a strong family tradition of hands-on home repair and maintenance. Growing up, my parents taught me to fix broken things and repurpose old materials before throwing anything away. I look forward to passing on my skills and knowledge to my three kids likewise.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Home owners (both new and established) Landlords Renters and Realtors Friends Family and Neighbors Commercial Building Engineers Some customers want only the Best features and brand name. Some want the rock-bottom price. Some are looking for overall big picture value. Some aren’t sure yet. Whether they are quite knowledgeable or mechanically clueless, most people appreciate an honest contractor who will listen carefully, educate the customer when necessary, and provide clarifying feedback along the way.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I recently installed a Goodman furnace and Airconditioner in a 100 year old farm house. The project ended up taking a second visit because of weather complications and a third visit because the existing chimney flue turned out never to have been sealed at the top, which we corrected. At the end of the project I was satisfied that we had sealed up a major air leak through the chimney which will make the whole house more energy efficient and comfortable for the family who lives there.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
While I love to install top of the line equipment and enjoy dialing up efficiency, to me the most important component in a mechanical system is not name brand or features. Our focus should be on quality craftsmanship and thoughtful installation. Likewise with service and maintenance, it is necessary to take time understanding the system in order to ensure the equipment is working well. As they say, cheap work isn’t good- and good work isn’t cheap.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
If you have pre-purchased components to be installed, have you verified that they are the correct item to be I stalled in your home or system? If you are trying to solve a new problem that has arisen, have you thought through all of the changes and conditions that could be related or pertinent? In addition to the main project you are looking to get accomplished, are there one or more other projects we can take care of at the same time to make best use of our time and your money?
