Introduction

When advising homeowners regarding the HVAC equipment that will meet their specific comfort and efficiency needs for their home, we start with the building science. We look to address the crucial issues of mechanical design rather than pitch sales of the newest or most innovatively advanced HVAC systems, in the hope that it will satisfy your indoor air quality and comfort criteria.

Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Our diagnostic charge for repairs is $99.00, and we have a flat rate price book for all repairs and services. We will credit the $99.00 diagnostic cost towards the price of the repair if the customer decides to move forward with our services. Typically, during normal business hours, smaller A/C & Heating repairs can range from$99.00 to $325.00. Our prices fall in the average range of the area we live in. We have a pricing book that can breakdown the different options on repairs or replacements. The installation is the most important aspect of this project. We prove our work by performing tests to the ducting and equipment to match the manufactures specs and recommendations. We also give an extended 3 years of labor on all installations. This will keep you rest assured that if something isn't up to your satisfaction, we will be back for free. A contractor that comes to quote your project should tell you exactly what tests will be performed. So, educate yourselves and find the best contractor. Remember, you get what you pay for.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
We try to give our customers a two-hour window of arrival and will make every attempt to provide them with services the same day if needed. We offer after hours emergency services as well for an increased diagnostic and repair cost. When we arrive at our customer's home, we don't just repair the faulty part and run out. We perform light maintenance on their equipment while we're onsite, evaluate the entire system and its performance, as well as focus our attention on their concerns within the HVAC system. The diagnostic charge has no time limit, so when were onsite, we are there to answer all their questions, inspect any areas of concerns they may have and educate them on the system & recommend any improvements we may think is fit.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
We have all the required documentation. Extensive experience in service and installations of HVAC equipment. We use load calculations on our duct installations as well as test in & out to show our clients the improvements they're paying for. We are comfort specialists, we overlook the entire HVAC system and fine-tune the airflow according to each room or offices needs, by using the Manual J load calculations. We will determine the CFM that is needed to efficiently heat or cool the area, and we test each vent with an air flow hood and balance them to perfection using manual dampers in your ducting. We also offer free leak testing on your ducting, this will help you understand the exact percentage of conditioned air that may be lost if the ducting is not sealed tight and properly installed.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
In 2001, I wasn't great a great student in high school; I was struggling. My father noticed this and encouraged me to join an occupational training program. I was just happy to get out of school half a day early. At 16 years old I enrolled in an Occupational program to become a technician. (Central County Occupational Center in San Jose CA)Currently known as Metro-ED. It didn't take long at all before I was fascinated with this trade and the skill I've acquired. Young, motivated & showing a ton of potential; it took me less than seven months in the program, I was elected Class Foreman. It was the feeling it gave me, seeing my father so proud of me, that I dedicated all my free time and studies to make a life career plan in the HVAC/R industry. I'd become a bit obsessed with my new skill, and now the class foreman, with duties consisting of tutoring other students with their studies & the responsibility of signing off projects & assignments they've completed. I was now overseeing the Maintenance of all the HVAC/R equipment on the campus. Equipped with a bag of tools, meters & a walkie-talkie, I was now leading a small crew of both, adults & young students, responsible for changing filters, tightening fan belts and servicing these roof-top Packaged units. This Experience paved the way for the Segway of my next chapter within the HVAC/R trade. At 18 years old I was hired at Supreme Air Systems, out of Campbell CA. It was a small family-owned Residential Heating & Cooling company that still in business today. The owner there was a great mentor to me and gave me my first opportunities to work as a Journeyman installer.

We work in tiny homes, large homes, and even custom-built homes with special requirements and fabrications that are needed. In the 19 years, I've been doing this, I have worked on most building types, most system styles, and met many different folks with all kinds of personalities and lifestyles, including pro athletes, high ranking politicians, and powerful business owners.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
I was basically working alone on a never-ending project, A 20,375 Sq. Ft sq ft home on Tuscaloosa Ave, in Atherton Ca. This job took me nearly a year and a half to complete with very little help I installed 8 central air conditioning & heating hybrid heat pump systems Long routed copper refrigeration lines to the outdoor equipment, running over 75' of 1 -1/8" lines and low voltage wiring 8 High Efficient Electronic air cleaners 2 kitchen hood vents with large blower style fans and variable speed controls 2 story laundry chute Extended lengths of piping to vent the 4 laundry dryers, powered with pressure sensed booster fans Over 90 multi-zoned duct runs including a lot of rectangular sheet metal duct 9 bath exhaust fans, and laundry room exhaust vents 4 HRV Ventilation Systems with ducting to outside, pulling in fresh air into the central air systems while venting out stale air from the living spaces The project was just about a quarter of a million dollars in just HVAC equipment and installations. The custom built mansion was sold for 35,000,000 in 2015.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you’re thinking about installing or replacing a central air conditioner, you’re probably aware that this is one of the most significant home improvements you can make in terms of comfort. On a hot, humid summer day, few amenities add to the quality of life more than central air conditioning. In order to install the right size unit, contractors need to know the home’s heating and cooling requirements, based on a variety of factors (e.g., size of the home, type of windows, insulation, etc.). Determining heating and cooling loads based on the building’s square footage is inaccurate and inadequate. Also, basing replacement equipment on the size of the original system could lead to problems since the original equipment size may have been incorrect. Selecting a high-efficiency unit is smart. Hiring a contractor who will install the unit, so it performs at that high level of efficiency is very smart. It takes great skill and a little extra time to design and test the system to ensure the equipment was installed correctly. Post-installation measurements are key factors in ensuring your energy savings and guarding your health and safety. Leaky ducts can cause health problems and waste the energy savings that new high-efficiency HVAC systems promise. Also, if the pipes are too small, they will cause the HVAC system to use more energy while delivering less comfort. Ducts that are too small also may lead to early Equipment failure. Are you sure you're hiring a contractor that can properly design the ducting system according to the manufactures specs? Does this contractor have installers that were also trained to use Manual J Load Calculations and will they be running all the tests necessary to determine proper airflow, static pressures, and perform a duct leak test? Did he promise a ducting system with 6% of air leakage or less? Its an actual requirement now, and if he isn't the one testing out the pipes, a 3rd party HERS testing company should be called to test the leakage, to get a building permit from the city inspector.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Will the contractor review the load calculation for your home with you? Did the contractor review the equipment installation procedures with you? Does the contractor have an installation checklist for testing the new equipment? Did the contractor review the condition of your duct system with you? Did the contractor offer a plan to solve identified problems? Upon job completion, will the contractor sit down and give you all the information you need? You should receive the equipment’s operators manual(s) and be shown how to do a few simple things like operating the thermostat and change the air filter. You should receive warranty and maintenance requirements and contact information. You should also receive a copy of the checklist used to test, measure, and ensure the system is working as designed and save them in your records.
