What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
If you've found a contractor you'd like to work with, we recommend checking their business credentials to make sure they're licensed and insured. You can verify contractor licenses through the VA DPOR website at their license lookup link. For larger projects, ask for a copy of a COI or "Certificate of Insurance" to verify their coverage limits in case of any accidents. Contractors will never intentionally cause damages, but accidents do happen so make sure you're covered! Check their Google business profile online and see if they are "Google Guaranteed" which means their employees have all passed a background check. Always read the fine print before signing a contract! And last but not least, do your homework to see if they are a reputable business you would be comfortable working with. Are they accredited through the BBB, how are their online reviews and responses to their customers, and how long have they been in business? Find a contractor that is easy to communicate with, priced right for your budgeting needs and choose one that you feel comfortable working with in your home.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
A few things to think about - 1. What type of equipment is the contractor a dealer of (this can get you better cost savings working with a certified dealer of the equipment you're interesting in installing, or technicians certified in the type of equipment you need repaired. 2. What types of warranties does your project offer in regards to manufacturer or labor warranties? 3. What is the expected time frame from beginning to end of your project, so you can prepare yourself and your home for the work to be done. 4. Are permits required for the job? Permits require inspections from the city you live in, and may require someone to be home in order to the inspection to be completed. Cities often have different scheduling requirements than the contractor you are working with. 5. Is the contractor licensed and insured? Ask for credentials to verify.
