Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
Pricing is usually done on a per job basis. On average, roof replacements range from $250-$1000 per square (100 sq ft). On the lower end are simple asphalt composition roofs, on the high end are premium products on complicated roofs.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
Meet at the customer house, go over a new roof folder that contains all our info and examples, answer all their questions, make a bid on hand for them, and keep in touch with them.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
Business Administration Degree- WSU Vancouver(Go Cougs!) CertainTeed Shingle Master Contractor CertainTeed Shingle Technology Specialist CertainTeed Shingle Master Applicator

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
Roofing has been in my family for 3 generations. I started working construction in High School. It paid for my education through college, and I haven't been able to leave it or the good people I work around.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
Our customers range from a quick (20 minute) repair of a leaking vent, to a 3 week house and shop reroof. We mostly work with homeowners who want to reroof their house, and are looking to get the most best roof for their investment.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
Last winter we redid a roof for a customer who was having serious issues with leaking in the same spot. We installed a new 50 year roof with a 50 year full replacement manufacturer's product defect warranty from CertainTeed, as well as built a cricket to divert water away from the problem area. All this was done in crazy winter weather, and the project went smoothly.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Check 3 things: 1. Worker's Comp and Insurance (you can lose your house to a contractor who isn't insured and/or doesn't carry worker's comp 2. References. Ask them for at least 10. Do yourself a favor, and randomly call 3 of the 10. 3. Make sure your contractor gives you a "Notice to Customer" from either WA or OR (depending on which side of the river you are on), and READ IT. 99% of contractor horror stories could be avoided if these steps are followed. 4. Ask who their supplier is. Call the supplier and double check their account is in good standing- Did you know suppliers can foreclose on your house, even if you pay your contractor? 5. A roof is a big decision, and it's more complicated than "just a roof". A roof can be as cheap or expensive as you want it. Set aside at least an hour to really interview your contractor. Resist the temptation to have them send you a bid when you are absent. Ask questions early and often. Remember, it's best to ask all of your questions BEFORE your roof is on!

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
1. How long are you going to remain in the house? 2. Why are you getting a new roof? Leaking, look bad? 3. What don't you like about your current roof? Can you change it with your new roof? 4. What don't you want in a contractor? What do you want? This is important, as a lot of issues arise simply from the fact the the customer and contractor aren't a good fit. Set expectations early. Tell your contractor exactly what you want and don't want, and how you feel about certain options. This will allow them to design your roof
