Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
We use an estimating software program to price most of our jobs. The prices in the software are determined by a third party company that surveys fair market prices of labor and material in each metropolitan are of the country. If you collect multiple estimates we will most likely be in the middle range. We try to price jobs just high enough to make the customer happy. Some contractors will price a job low to win business. Often times, in a scramble to salvage a profit, they will use inferior materials and/or incompetent, lower skilled/paid workers. In contrast, we use only warrantied materials and skilled workers. In addition, we are fully insured for your protection.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
I like to have a brief conversation on the phone to get an idea of the project and make an appointment to come walk the job with the customer. We then discuss the scope of work and the time expectations. For smaller jobs, I will often give a price on the spot. However, for larger projects I prefer to go back to the office to write a detailed estimate while reviewing photos I've taken. I would then email the estimate to the customer or preferably make a return visit to go over the estimate to make sure nothing was missed. This also give the customer an opportunity to add items to the job which they forgot to mention previously.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
I have on the job training in roofing beginning with one of the largest storm restoration companies in the country, $80 million in sales per year. Subsequently, I was trained in writing complete house fire and flood restoration estimates with Paul Davis Restoration. Paul Davis restoration is the second or third largest fire and flood restoration franchise in the world with over 1000 locations in the USA and Canada. Also, I have a B.A. from Indiana University, was once a custom home builder, REALTOR and held a Texas Insurance adjusters licence.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I started in custom home building. When the economy tanked in 2008, I went into the (recession proof) storm damage roofing business.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I work primarily with residential homeowners. Over the years I've worked with the wide spectrum of society.

Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?

unfold fold
One of my favorite project of this past year was a complete exterior renovation of a farm house in rural Morgan county. We replace the roofing, siding, soffit, gutters and shutters. The color pallet was completely changed and the home appeared brand new. Roofing-1 day, siding- 3 days, gutters-1 day.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
Try to hire the person or company you think will do the best work. If their initial price is higher than you want to pay, try to negotiate the price down. This can often be done by being flexible on the terms. For example, allowing them to start in three weeks instead of this weekend. Furthermore, if you have a large project that will take several weeks and require lots of consultation, you'll want to hire someone that you like or at least are comfortable communicating with.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
How much can I afford to spend? When do I want to start and when do I want to be finished? What do I do with my pets if they would be in the way? Do I need a designer or architect?
