Q&A

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

unfold fold
I charge anywhere from $10 – $30+ per square foot, starting at a minimal of $800 per project. My square footage charge depends upon the amount of detail, preparation of the space and supplies that it will take to complete the project. All supplies and travel expenses are included into the square footage charge. Once a design and price is contracted, I will require a standard 50% deposit of the full project price, as far in advance as possible, in order to have plenty of time to get supplies and to hold scheduled starting and completion dates of the project. I cannot schedule and hold future dates until I’ve received a deposit. I do charge a design fee starting at $200, which will be waived or extracted from the agreed mural price, once we have reached an agreement and the first deposit is made. I do give out discounts. Small business discount – 10%. Repeat customers – 15% Bigger discounts can apply, depending on the situation, such as charity, or customers who decide to have multiple murals done with in the same contract.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

unfold fold
First, I listen to the customer and get a sense of their vision, idea, or desires and the purpose of the mural. Next, I begin to help them process and bring their vision, ideas or desires to life through conversation and design work. Typically I can come up with a pretty accurate cost for the mural, once it begins to develop and solidify in conversation, before the actual design work. If a person has a direct reference, they want me to copy, along with the square footage and I can give them fairly accurate price on the spot.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

unfold fold
SCPA, School of Creative and Performing Arts. A lot of years of experience. It may be different now, but when I began using spray paint and doing streetstyle artwork, there was no official schooling or teaching for the style or medium. Although for the past 18 years I have on and off taught private lessons, in youth centers and I’ve even taught classes in the public school system, on how to use spray paint for art or creative purposes in general.

How did you get started doing this type of work?

unfold fold
I discovered at a young age that I had a high level of natural artistic talent. My parents put me into, SCPA, School Of Creative And Performing Arts, where they helped refine my artistic skill and ability. In my late teens, I began doing graffiti style street art. Being a creative in many areas, I eventually decided to take visual arts to the next level, also making it a means of living.

What types of customers have you worked with?

unfold fold
I’ve worked with a wide range of customers, culturally, economically, creatively. From people who have very little idea of what it is they want and give me free reign or I help them figure out what it is that they want. On the flipside, I also have worked with customers who are very certain, and particular, desiring to play a big role in the creative process, while I fulfill the vision. I am appreciative and thankful for all the work I receive and those who choose to work with me.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

unfold fold
My number one advice would be to have a good grip on the average cost to having mural work done. In the midwest the ( average ) pricing is anywhere from $20-$35 a square ft. I say this, because it is typically the number one deciding factor to whether or not the potential customer will go through with having a mural done.

What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

unfold fold
Here are some important factors that play a major roll when having mural work done. 1. Like I’ve suggested before, the pricing is usually the number one deciding factor in whether the potential customer will go through with having a mural done or not. 2. If you’re gonna have a mural done in or on your place of business or home, etc. I believe the investment and commitment of having a mural done, is right below having a tattoo. Although it’s not as permanent, it’s definitely not something you’re gonna wanna pay more money to change or end up covering up because you’re unsatisfied. With that being said, moving onto number 3… 3. Find the right artist for you. Which is an artist with a consistent quality and style that you love. Or maybe someone like myself, who has a broad range of ability to adapt and do different styles, with different mediums. 4. Be mindful of how long it can take the average artist to get something done. That may play a factor, depending on the setting, position or necessary demand of the customer. There is the situation that artist are usually doing more than one job at a time. Sometimes there is a conflict of schedule between a customer in the artist. Some artists just have a faster process than others. I would say find someone who can give high quality work, fast and efficiently. But if this is the case, be willing or ready to pay more.
